I'm a big fan of small unassuming Mexican restaurants serving killer food. So when our local newspaper published their 'Not a tourist trap: 8 Austin Tex-Mex and Mexican restaurants to try' I was not surprised to see that 3 were already familiar. Of the remaining 5, the one that rose to first pick (purely based on name) was El Secreto de Abuela.

Situated in a run down neighborhood on the cusp of being discovered by hipsters. Family run, two sisters wait tables and I presume the parents cook. Solid food at rock bottom prices. One of the girls said they've had a spike of customers since the article got published. I have to go back soon.

YUM! A friend took me there this week for breakfast. Good service, old fashioned Mexican breakfast (no fusion) and nice quiet area.
    I'd go back anytime!

One of the few "hole in the wall" spots in East Austin. Really love the authentic vibe and the food was great! The staff was pretty good and friendly. I tell everyone about this but also, not just everyone. Will love to keep this place to its true authentic self.

Its a must go If your visiting Austin also soooo cheap ! We went to higher end restaurants in downtown and nothing we were impressed with . We saw this place and we thought let's try it out and wow ! Food and service was amazing! Try the chilaquiles verdes for breakfast!

I can't even wait to leave, I am eating the best Tortilla Soup I have ever had in my life. I am a certified soup snob...

Super fresh and tasty ceviche torta as well...my mouth has no clue what to do...get here!!!!!!
