I'm a big fan of small unassuming Mexican restaurants serving killer food. So when our local newspaper published their 'Not a tourist trap: 8 Austin Tex-Mex and Mexican restaurants to try' I was not surprised to see that 3 were already familiar. Of the remaining 5, the one that rose to first pick (purely based on name) was El Secreto de Abuela.
Situated in a run down neighborhood on the cusp of being discovered by hipsters. Family run, two sisters wait tables and I presume the parents cook. Solid food at rock bottom prices. One of the girls said they've had a spike of customers since the article got published. I have to go back soon. -

YUM! A friend took me there this week for breakfast. Good service, old fashioned Mexican breakfast (no fusion) and nice quiet area.
I'd go back anytime! -

One of the few "hole in the wall" spots in East Austin. Really love the authentic vibe and the food was great! The staff was pretty good and friendly. I tell everyone about this but also, not just everyone. Will love to keep this place to its true authentic self.

Its a must go If your visiting Austin also soooo cheap ! We went to higher end restaurants in downtown and nothing we were impressed with . We saw this place and we thought let's try it out and wow ! Food and service was amazing! Try the chilaquiles verdes for breakfast!
